Lucy Chagoma lives in Abraham village, in Lobi region of Dedza District. She joined MAFFA in 2012 and was selected to be a Farmer Research Team member. She grows pigeonpea, groundnut, beans, millet, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes and local open-pollinated varieties of orange maize. She decided to plant pigeonpea because she understood that it will improve the soils, and she can use the stems for firewood. She and her family will eat the pods and also sell some. She had already buried the groundnut and bean residue from the field, and she is making manure and will apply manure in this field and plant maize next year.
